rEFERRALS

A referral from your General Practitioner or Psychiatrist is required to access Medicare rebates for psychology appointments under a Mental health treatment plan (see below for more information on getting a MHTP). You will not need a referral if you are planning to utilise your private health extras to subsidise your appointments. You can also self- refer and do not need a referral to attend an appointment. If you are planning to self-refer simply call our team to book an appointment. Please note that if you are self-referred you will not be able to claim a rebate via Medicare.

Rebates assist in covering a portion of the consultation fee and can be available via Medicare’s Better Access Scheme and via your private health insurer.

MEDICARE ASSISTANCE

Medicare rebates are available for services provided under a Mental Health Treatment Plan (also commonly referred to as a Mental Health Care Plan). A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) is completed with your GP prior to your first psychology appointment. A MHTP entitles you to up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group therapy sessions per person, per calendar year. Sessions can be delivered in-person or via Telehealth. Typically your GP will refer you for 6 sessions initially. Following the 6th session your Psychologist provides a report to your GP that contains general information regarding your treatment to-date and recommendations for future treatment. You will meet with your GP to review your progress and if required your GP will re-refer you for an additional 4 sessions- totalling 10 sessions for the calendar year.

Mental Health Treatment Plan Fact Sheet

Medicare rebates for services are as follows:

  • Registered Psychologists Medicare rebate of $93.35

  • Clinical Psychologists Medicare rebate of $137.05

For your convenience, Medicare rebates are processed for you by our friendly client support team following your appointment using our secure online system and your rebate will be paid directly into your nominated bank account.

Please note that Medicare rebates are also available to clients referred by a Psychiatrist. The Human Services website contains useful information regarding MHTP’s and the Better Access initiative. Further information can be found here https://www.health.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/2020/09/better-access-fact-sheet-patients.pdf or please call our friendly client support team if you have any further questions. Please note in order to claim your Medicare rebate the Gold Coast Psychology Clinic require a copy of your MHTP on file prior to your first appointment. If for any reason you are unable to provide a copy of your referral and MHTP you will be unable to claim a Medicare rebate.

PRIVATE HEALTH COVER

Depending on your extras cover you may be entitled to a rebate via your private health insurance. Rebates can assist in covering a portion of the consultation fee. If you are planning to access rebates via your private health insurer please call your private health insurer to confirm your cover prior to your first appointment.

Please note: You are unable to claim both Medicare and Private Health insurance for the same session.

fINANCIAL hardship and fee assistance

If for any reason you are experiencing financial hardship please call our client support team or discuss with your treating Psychologist at your next appointment. The Gold Coast Psychology Clinic is passionate about supporting our community and providing accessible services.

CANCELLATION POLICY

As demand for appointments with our psychologists are high. We require 48 hours notice

If you cancel the day of your session or fail to arrive for a session, inclusive of forgetting it was scheduled, the full session fee will be incurred. Appointments cancelled on the day impact both clients waiting for a session and the psychologist who spent the morning preparing the session.

For any appointments on Mondays, notifications of any reschedules are to be received by the latest the Friday prior. Weekends are considered out of hours.

Any sessions not confirmed by 8:00am the day prior, or Friday for sessions scheduled on Mondays, will be removed and will be offered to the next client on the waitlist.

We do offer Telehealth sessions as an alternative should you be too unwell to attend in person.

Please note Medicare and private health insurance rebates are not available for cancelled appointments.
